Language exposure benefit to talker learning in an unfamiliar language

چکیده
Recent research shows that exposure to an unfamiliar language is sufficient in improving talker learning. Here, we further investigated the nature of this effect by exploring individual differences and methodological issues. Two groups of Englishmonolingual adults were recruited: one with regular exposure to French (Montréal), and the other without (Storrs). Both groups learned the voices of English talkers faster than French talkers; however, in contrast to previous findings, no group differences were found in talker learning, which may be due to task differences (4-AFC vs. 2-AFC task). However, stable patterns in individual differences emerged: performance in identifying English talkers was correlated with performance in identifying French talkers for Storrs residents, but not for Montréal residents. These findings suggest that a languagegeneral “talent” contributes to talker learning only in encounters with highly novel languages, and that exposure to the surface acoustic-phonetic properties of an unfamiliar language drives the language

Gradient language dominance affects talker learning.
Traditional conceptions of spoken language assume that speech recognition and talker identification are computed separately. Neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies imply some separation between the two faculties, but recent perceptual studies suggest better talker recognition in familiar languages than unfamiliar languages. A familiar-language benefit in talker recognition potentially impl...
متن کاملGeneral Language Ability Predicts Talker Identification
Individuals can use both linguistic and non-linguistic features of the speech signal to identify talkers. For instance, listeners have more difficulty identifying talkers in unfamiliar languages compared to a native language (language familiarity effect), implying that language-specific knowledge aids talker identification. In the present study, the source of the language familiarity benefit on...

متن کاملImprovements to vowel categorization in non-native regional accents resulting from multiple- versus single-talker training: A computational approach
A computational modeling study was conducted using multinomial logistic regression to predict whether exposure to an unfamiliar regional accent of English would influence vowel categorization in (1) the exposure accent, (2) the native accent, and (3) another unfamiliar accent. We manipulated the number of talkers in the exposure data to determine whether talker variability influenced the effica...
متن کاملExposure to multiple accents supports infants' understanding of novel accents.
Accented speech poses a challenge for listeners, particularly those with limited knowledge of their language. In a series of studies, we explored the possibility that experience with variability, specifically the variability provided by multiple accents, would facilitate infants' comprehension of speech produced with an unfamiliar accent. 15- and 18-month-old American-English learning infants w...
